Pool bonding failures are the most dangerous electrical defect around a Florida pool

Equipotential bonding ties the pool shell, the perimeter surface, the ladders and handrails, the pump motor, and any metal within reach into one bonded system, so there is no voltage difference between any two things a swimmer can touch at the same time. When it fails, the pool becomes the path.

The warning sign is a tingle on a ladder, a handrail, or a wet deck. That is not static and it is not normal. It means a voltage difference exists between two bonded surfaces that should be at the same potential, and it warrants getting out of the water and calling someone the same day.

Older Florida pools frequently have the pump bonded and nothing else, because they predate the current requirements. It gets discovered during a remodel, an equipment replacement, or an inspection, and it has to be corrected before that work can pass.

Variable speed pump conversions are a common trigger. Replacing the pump means revisiting the circuit, and that is usually when the rest of the bonding gets looked at properly for the first time since the pool was built.
